According to Wikipedia in April 07, MySpace had over 174m members. In March 07 the Telegraph reported that 100m self made videos are watched every day on YouTube, and according to ZDnet in April 07, Facebook had reached 21m registered users who between them, generate 1.5bn page views a day.
If the very mention of some of these websites has you asking "Who?", then that's something to be concerned about! But even if you know about them, and their colleagues in the industry at the likes of Bebo, Friend Reunited, and Second Life, you might still want to learn more about how to engage with their users - that's if it's not just all a fad of course.
